(S) Mercy Center

Date : 18th of December 2018

CAS Learning Outcomes :

5. Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively.

6. Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance

In our school, there is a week called “Wells Without Walls” at the end of each semester where students have opportunities to participate in various workshops, events and field trips held by different students and clubs. I decided to visit Mercy Center (a place where orphans and children from a family facing big financial problem stay together), since it was a good chance to interact with the kids. When we first reach the Mercy Center, the kids were lining up and dancing in the gym as a morning exercise. To get closer to the kids, we danced along with them. The kids were very friendly that it wasn’t very hard to become intimate. After getting closer to them, we divided ourselves into several groups to color the paper provided. Since I’m not a good Thai speaker, I couldn’t communicate with the kids properly, but that language barrier didn’t change anything. The kids and I together enjoyed coloring the paper. In addition, we had an activity together with the kids in the gym, such as football and a game of drop-the-handkerchief. They were so energetic that I could feel their energy and gain it at the same time. I visited Mercy Center to interact with the kids and to be a more responsible global citizen, but the kids were giving positive impacts on me as well.
